How it works

Mute video removes the soundtrack from a video file and leaves the picture untouched. It all happens on your own device: the file is never uploaded, no account is needed and nothing is charged, however many videos you put through it.

The picture is not re-encoded. The video track is copied into a new file frame for frame, so the result has the same resolution, the same frame rate and the same quality as the original - it is simply silent. That is also why it is quick: the work is copying rather than converting, and most clips are done in seconds.

The format of the original is kept, so an MP4 comes back as an MP4 and a MOV as a MOV. Muting is what you want when background music would get a video taken down, when a recording caught wind, traffic or a conversation you would rather not publish, or when you plan to lay a new soundtrack over the clip later. If you need the sound as a separate file rather than gone for good, the video converter can save it as M4A or WAV.

  1. Drop a video onto the page or pick a file. It stays on your device - there is nothing to upload and no queue to wait in.
  2. The page reads the file and shows its length, its resolution and whether it actually carries sound. A video that is already silent is reported as such instead of being processed for nothing.
  3. Press “Remove audio”. The picture moves into a new file of the same format with the audio track left out, so nothing about the image changes.
  4. Watch the progress bar. Long videos take longer, so keep the tab open until it finishes - you can stop the job at any point.
  5. Download the result. It is saved as a separate file with “-muted” added to the name, so the original on your disk stays exactly as it was.
