Protect PDF with a password

Your file and your password stay on your device — nothing is uploaded.

How it works

Protect PDF sets an open password on a document, so anyone who receives it has to type that password before the file will display. Encryption is 256-bit AES, the strongest the PDF format supports, and the result is a standard protected PDF that opens in Adobe Acrobat, browsers and mobile readers — they simply ask for the password. There is no recovery: the password is not stored anywhere, so if you lose it the file is gone. Encryption happens in your browser, so the document and the password both stay on your device.

  1. Drop a PDF onto the page.
  2. Enter the password you want, then re-enter it in the confirmation field — use the eye toggle to check what you typed.
  3. Save that password somewhere safe before you go any further. Nobody, including us, can recover or reset it.
  4. Press “Protect PDF” — the file is encrypted with 256-bit AES right on your device.
  5. Download the protected PDF. From then on, opening it in any reader requires the password.
