MP4 plays everywhere, so pick it if you are not sure. WebM gives the same quality in a smaller file. MOV is what video editing programs expect and MKV is what media servers and archives prefer; both hold the same picture as MP4. GIF makes a short looping animation for the places that take nothing else.

A GIF keeps every frame in full, so it grows fast: a clip that is a couple of megabytes as WebM can run to hundreds as a GIF. Before you start, the page shows how many frames you will get and roughly how large the file will be, so the balance between length, size and smoothness stays your choice. Frame rates come from a short list of the speeds GIF plays back exactly. Its range of colours is small, so smooth gradients can show as visible bands, and a GIF carries no sound.

M4A and WAV keep only the sound. M4A is the usual choice: when the sound in the video is already in that form it is kept exactly as it is, which takes seconds and loses nothing. WAV is uncompressed, around 10 MB a minute, and is worth picking when a program you use asks for that format. MP4 and WebM keep the original sound; if that cannot work for a particular file, you will see a note before the conversion starts.
