How it works

Trim video cuts a piece out of a recording: you set where it starts and where it ends, and everything outside those two marks is gone. The work runs on your own device - the file is never uploaded, there is no account to create and nothing is charged, however long the video is and however many times you do it.

The piece you keep comes back in the format you brought in: MP4 stays MP4, MOV stays MOV, WebM stays WebM. Resolution, frame rate and the soundtrack are left exactly as they were, so trimming is not a conversion and the clip does not lose quality on the way. Where the picture can simply be copied across it is, which is why a short piece taken out of a long recording is often ready in seconds.

Long recordings still take a while, so keep the tab open until the work is done. The page shows the progress and roughly how long is left, and you can stop it at any point. How large a file you can open depends on the device you are working on rather than on a limit we picked, and the figure shown on the page is the real one for this browser.

  1. Drop a video onto the page or pick a file. It stays on your device - there is nothing to upload and nothing to wait for.
  2. Set the start and the end of the piece you want to keep. Drag a slider to find the moment, or type the exact second into the field beside it.
  3. Check the bar under the fields: it shows where the piece sits inside the recording and how long it is next to the full length.
  4. Press Trim video and keep the tab open. You will see the progress and roughly how long is left, and you can cancel at any moment.
  5. Download the clip. It comes in the same format as your file with -trimmed added to the name, so the original stays where it was.
